An inside look at the design process for one story recently published in Ninth Letter.
In the Fall/Winter 2007 edition of the Ninth Letter, a story appeared by the author Travis Kurowski called, Basquiat and Six Uses of Space. As one of the art directors for the Ninth Letter I had the distinct pleasure of watching and being participatory in the evolution of the amazing outcome of this piece. In the end, the final design was an amazing example of an iterative analog-digital design process. The final boards (approximately 4ft x 2.5ft) were so moving and the process so marvelous to watch that I decided to make a short behind-the-scenes look at the making of this story.
The Motion Design Lab is the home for the work and research of Daniel Goscha. I am currently an educator and researcher in Graphic Design and Digital Media at Nicolet College. My research interests include typography in time-based media, applying the principles of graphic design to filmmaking, examining integrative hand-machine processes to create humanisticly driven images and designs not capable of being created by digital processes alone, and the integration of Japanese aesthetics and aesthetic concepts (in particular wabi-sabi and mono no aware) into design and typography.
